In the last two decades, every brand, be they luxury or otherwise, decided it needed an SUV to remain relevant in a market gone crazy for tall vehicleswhose only foray off-road is the occasional gravel road or the mandatory pot-hole or badly repaired road here in Sri Lanka. As of now, Ferrari is the only brand that has no plans for an SUV!
Building an SUV has also meant the difference between survival and the liquidator for some – as was the case some years ago with Porsche before the Cayenne was launched!
So on that note, this month we have tested the “Maserati of SUV’s” – the Levante. According to the guys at Maserati, the Levante has been in the pipe line for no less than 13 years! Hopefully they have done some solid testing/research during those long years. So now whats left is for you to read our very own Ranjan’s Test Drive feature of the Levante to find out how its faring locally.
Hope you like this issue of Motor, where we also have the second Truck & Bus supplement inside. In there, we have also tested the Mercedes Vito. As per Deputy Editor Ashraaq who drove the Vito, it is heads and shoulders above your average mini-bus/van. The ride comfort is not second to most large sedans, and we believe that it will be a hit with hotels and tour operators, and indeed large families.
