We at Motor are often the envy of the younger set who often say they “would do anything to do the job that you are doing”. They are under the impression that all we do is drive nice cars; and that we get paid for it! Well, partially true. We do drive a lot of cars – in fact during the past 24 years I estimate that we would have driven some 670 brand new cars and some 100+ souped-up and/or race cars. And no, myself as editor-in-chief have not driven most. In fact it is our Test Drive Team that gets to drive the best cars – most of the time. Of course yes we do have fun doing our work. And then the question invariably comes “…what is the best car you have ever driven”?
See, there are two types of car buyers/owners. One’s that are brand loyal, and others that just need a set of wheels to get from A to B. Brand loyal people will never budge from their brand. At the bottom of the scale they will prefer a Suzuki to a Peroudua. At the next level someone will always opt for Nissan over Toyota. And then there are the BMW guys and the Mercedes guys.
End of the day, the overwhelming majority of cars are good. Better in almost every measurable way than the equivalent cars of ten years ago. Virtually everything is quantifiably better than anything made twenty or thirty years ago. Safer, faster, more economical.
So what is the best car I have ever driven? I guess when you have done this job for close to a quarter century, you don’t get “wowed” by even the so called best of the exotics. I guess you could say that you don’t let your emotions overcome you when it comes to cars. So my thing is… wherever your brand loyalty lies (or you just want a car to go from A to B), the choice is yours. In this day and age, you can’t go wrong.
Having said all that, I got the chance to briefly drive my friend’s Porsche 911 Carrera T this month! Read about it in the following pages, plus all the goodies and the good things that we have been up to, to get you this 24th anniversary magazine in to you hands.
