A Fitting End to a Decade

Marino Beach

A Fascinating Hotel located in the heart of Colombo – Sri Lanka.

DECEMBER 2019: A long walk to the reception area and lifts to all the floors. A white grand piano begging to be played; perhaps it will be this 31st night. All areas are controlled by barriers and work at the touch of a room key card. Even entry to the rooftop swimming pool, its bar and small restaurant admit to you only if you have your key card.

The washroom was exactly as it should be, at the entrance. A bathrobe and slippers were included and made it all so convenient. A fabulous view of the Indian Ocean was possible, as only a glass panel separates the bathroom from the bedroom. However, rest assured on your privacy if not alone as there is an electric blind if needed. A sofa for two by a window stood overlooking the not too attractive skyline of Colombo – which is constantly reinventing itself, and the rather rough-looking sea.

A feature I did not enjoy was the relative coldness that the hotel seemed to have, maybe because it was opened in August this year (2019). Natural light floods every room and gives the bedroom a spaciousness which was so welcome. A discretely located lift grants access to three floors of underground car parking, and to an attached shopping mall, the Marino Mall, which contains shops, a food court, an entertainment area for all ages and a multiplex cinema. The hotel’s main restaurant is open to everyone, and serves a generous buffet breakfast.

The rooftop pool is the hotel’s most appealing feature and so is its décor and hospitality. Many tourists find its sophistication a memorable feature, especially those on their way out of the island after an unforgettable stay in the land that has it all, Sri Lanka.

Bon voyage, dear readers and have a Happy New Year.
