First win of the year for Yevan David and Motopark

One of the title top Euroformula title contenders this year, Sri Lanka’s Yevan David, has opened his count of victories by winning with authority Race 2 a Portimão, on a sunny morning. By the same token, Yevan has given Team Motopark its first success of the season.

“We have been working hard and well during the weekend”, commented Yevan, “and it’s nice we could materialise all that in this morning’s race. Competion is much higher this year and it’s going to be an interesting fight at the top. I want to be part of it!”

Seventeen-year-old Yevan made Sri Lanka proud by becoming the first driver from the the country to win a race in a top-level international single-seater championship, after the brilliant double victory on Sunday 27th April.

The young sensation produced a stunning performance at the Algarve International Circuit, securing two back-to-back wins and a podium finish to open up a commanding early lead in the drivers’ standings.

Driving for Germany’s renowned Motopark team, Yevan overcame a tough start to the weekend by finishing third in Saturday’s opening race. But on Sunday, the Sri Lankan teenager delivered two masterful performances — first claiming Race 2 with a bold overtaking move early on, and then sealing Race 3 after a dramatic battle, which ended under red flag conditions.

“A double win and a podium? I couldn’t be happier,” said an emotional David. “It was a tricky start, but we never gave up. The team worked so hard, and this result is for them, for Sri Lanka, and for everyone who has supported me Flying the Lion flag high”.

With these victories, David became the first Sri Lankan to win races in the Euroformula Open - a fiercely competitive European single-seater championship featuring identical Dallara 324 chassis powered by TOM’S engines.

In total, David left Portimão with six trophies: two for outright race wins, three Rookie victories, and a third-place finish. His stellar weekend performance also gave Team Motopark their first success of the season.

“It was a tricky race with two safety cars,” David admitted. “I’m glad I built a gap before the interruptions, and even though it finished under the red flag, it was a fantastic result.”

David now leads the championship with 65 points, 10 clear of his closest rival. His next challenge comes at the legendary Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium on May 16-18.

Backed by Merc Stop, Alcom, Dayholi, and the Ceylon Motor Sports Club (CMSC), Yevan David’s rise marks a new chapter for Sri Lankan motorsport at the international level.

At just 17, David is already the most successful Sri Lankan single-seater driver in history. A two-time X30 Asian Series karting champion, he has scored points in both Formula 4 and Eurocup 3, and claimed top position at the FIA Motorsport Games. His current campaign with Team Motopark has now firmly placed him as a title contender in the 2025 Euroformula Open.

AS IT HAPPENED

Mexican driver Garfias led in the initial laps ahead of Stack, David, Shin, Pearson, Barrichello and Ryabov, but David soon started charging, stealing second from Stack in lap 3 and taking the lead from Garfias two laps later. Trying to defend his position, the Mexican went wide, being passed by Stack and Shin as well.

With David in full control of events, not much happened until lap 11 when Stack was sent into a spin by Shin. Eventually, David crossed the line first ahead of Shin, previous day’s winner Pearson and Kucharczyk, who recovered well. They were followed by a trio of South Americans (de la Torre, Barrichello, Garfias) and by Green, Stack and Ryabov to complete the top ten, with Rashid and Brajnik out of the points.
